Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

Facilities

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.

Combined with our free parking, we are lucky to have a clear viewing track where all race goers can get up close to the action with our final fence located close to the car park so you can enjoy the thrill of the action from the comfort of your car.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.
 

Food

In between races, spectators can avail of the catering options that we have on offer.

Our outside catering vendor offers a choice of burgers, rolls, sausages and chips.

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

No, we do not have an official dress code we just advise our race goers to stay warm and dry for your days racing and to prepare yourself for all types of Irish weather.

Dogs are very welcome, but need to be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments. We also have a range of catering options on course.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop on your way to the races.

Amenities

Kirkistown point-to-point is an ideal day out for all the family, giving you the opportunity to sample the heart of national hunt racing.

Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit is a permanent motorsport circuit located next door to the point-to-point which is between the villages of Kirkistown and Portavogie, on the Ards Peninsula of County Down.

The circuit is owned and operated by the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland, who opened the circuit in 1953 on the site of the former RAF Kirkistown Royal Air Force airfield.

Gerald Quinn and Philip McBurney won this race in good style 12 months ago with Broughshane and there is sure to be plenty of interest in their representative in this year renewal Ballee. Seven other handlers could potentially be represented as they go in search of their first four-year-old winners of 2023 and the market will give a good guide as to what is expected from the newcomers.

TIME WAS may have disappointed on her stable debut at Borris House before Christmas but that was her first run in nine months and she is entitled to have improved as she was only denied by the narrowest of margins at Loughrea last year when with Emmet Mullins and if she can bounce back to that form she certainly sets the benchmark. Indiana West is also entered later on the card, but if running here, she is the obvious danger having bounced back on better ground at Tyrella, whilst Barrack Village and Bayonetta are others for the shortlist.

ROMEO MAGICO was only beaten by just over four lengths in a Broughshane maiden on his debut towards the end of last season in a race that has already produced a couple of subsequent maiden winners. The Cormac Doyle stable have also had two winners and a second from their four runners in recent weeks and look to be a stable to follow at present. Ballyfort went close at Castletown-Geoghegan and if posting a clear round he should not be too far away alongside the Borris House third Dream Jet.

BRAIN POWER comes here having picked-up his fourth success of the campaign in comfortable fashion at Tyrella a fortnight ago and looks the likely favourite for this. Coastal Tiep has won around here in the past and is back in the pointing fields having been keeping high company in the hunter chase division of late, running particularly well at Down Royal over Christmas. He is a new rival for Brain Power here as is Le Malin who gave Winged Leader a race at Cragmore recently.

LARS LASS had to beat geldings to open her account at Lingstown last season, beating a subsequent two-time winner Gray Rock to get off the mark, and she emerged with a lot of credit from her first effort in winners company when chasing home two very strong benchmarks for the division. The switch to mares only company could be rewarded here. Few will have travelled further than Ma Hoey from the Athea-based Eoin McCarthy stable and she was an emphatic maiden winner at Cragmore which may leave her as the pick of the last time out maiden winners in this.

BALLYDESMOND was unable to follow up the big step forward that he appeared to take on his stable debut at Loughanmore when well beaten around here in November, but he has been given a break since then and is worth a second chance in this. Mount Wilson has not been seen since falling at the last in a four-year-old maiden around here in 2021, but he showed definite promise then, whilst Leish Oscars Son cannot be discounted as he has been placed over hurdles and has a mark of 97 on the track.
