Track Biography:
East Down Foxhounds Point-to-Point course at Tyrella is situated at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains made famous by the Percy French song.
With the 2018 Spring season, East Down will have been racing at Tyrella for fifty four years. Two meetings are held each Spring, in January and March.
Normally the first meeting of the Spring calendar in the Northern Region, Tyrella is a right handed undulating track where, given it’s close proximity to the sea and sandy soil is well drained and more often than not, produces good going.

How To Get There
By Road
From The South:
Take the M1 North from Dublin. In Newry take the A25 through Rathfriland. In Clough at T junction go right and immediately left to get to Tyrella.
From the West:
Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Go through Seaforde village and then Clough. At the end of Clough Main Street turn left, following the sign for Tyrell. The course is on the right after about four miles.
From the North:

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.
This allows racegoers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.
We have bookmakers on site and some will also show and take bets on track racing in both Ireland and England.

We don?t have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing.
Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.
Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.
At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.
No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

One of the real treats of racing at Tyrella, is just how close racegoers can get to the action.
Watch the horses being saddled up by their trainers before making your way to the parade ring where the horses, jockeys and connections gather to discuss their pre-race tactics.

EVE MONEYPENNY would undoubtedly have finished in the placings had she not come a cropper at the final fence in Carrigarostig earlier in the month. She encountered far more testing conditions than is likely to be the case at this track and likely sets the standard. Indiana West will likely be better suited by the conditions having been pulled-up in soft ground at Lisronagh and her efforts at Rathcannon and Toomebridge would see her enter the mix, whilst Newmill Moll is another with a good deal of experience.

FRALIMONTI BILBERRY was no match for the subsequent Down Royal bumper winner King Of Kingsfield on his debut at Portrush, but he would have finished an encouraging second had he not come down at the last. Brunello could make his stable debut having formerly contested the Listed Yeats Stakes on the level back in 2021. He was sent off as the favourite for a Naas maiden hurdle when last seen in action, but raced too keenly on that occasion. If settling here he could be of interest given that market confidence last time, with Ballyfort also capable of getting involved.

EVERYTHING NOW ran very well in open company behind stablemate Hardline at Tinahely recently. He was only beaten just over three lengths on that occasion and will be suited by taking a step back in grade here. Gorthill is the obvious danger having chased home the now four-time winner Ultimate Optimist at Loughanmore on his first start in winners company back in October, and his conqueror certainly franked the form with a wide-margin hunter chase win in Limerick over Christmas. Of the others, Grain De Folie could not be discounted if bouncing back to his Loughbrickland form.

BRAIN POWER has been up among the very top open horses this season and he goes in search of a fourth win of the season in a race that he won comfortably 12 months ago. It is hard to oppose him on what we have seen of him recently. Lough Derg Spirit has 17 lengths to find with the selection from their meeting at Borris House last month which may leave Bold Enough as an interesting alternative. He was fourth in the Midlands National last Summer and joins an in-form stable with a track mark of 138.

TIME WAS may have posted a very disappointing performance at Borris House on her stable debut last month. It was her first outing in nine months and she is entitled to step forward from it, as a reproduction of her Loughrea effort from last season would see her more than capable of picking up what looks like a very winnable opportunity. Neat Locality has more experience to draw on and was placed in a maiden hurdle at Downpatrick last summer but will need to step up on her autumn form.

LONGHOUSE STAR was in the process of running a big race when coming down at the final fence in Boulta before Christmas and if he could reproduce that effort he looks like being the one to side with here. He could come up against a proven horse at this venue in Butcher Barry. He has not been seen since exiting at the last in this last year and his connections have a good record at this venue, whilst the luckless Ballylinch and U Asking Me are others for the shortlist.
