Track Biography:

The Avondhu foxhounds were formed in 1920, with point-to-point racing being held as part of the Cork Waterford circuit from the late 1930's until the present day. In the late 1950’s the meeting was held at Knockanard, Fermoy and racing was over banks.

In the 1960's the venue changed once again, this time to Lisnagar outside Rathcormac. The fixture remained here for a number of years before moving to Moorpark, located just outside Fermoy, where it stayed until 1994 where it return to the original venue at Knockanard, the current race venue.

Our fixture has attracted some good horses over the years including Keen Leader, For Bill, Missed That and Joacci. Missed That won on his only start between the flags as a five-year-old at Knockanard, he subsequently won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.

For Bill was a prolific race mare, clocking up eleven career wins including, two point-to-points, three national hunt flat races (bumpers), three hurdles and three chases, registering back type over hurdles and fences. The presenting mare has breed one runner thus far, Speak Easy, who won his maiden point-to-point at Kilworth in March of 2017 for the Donnnchadh Doyle yard and was subsequently sold to Joseph O'Brien for 220,000 pounds and now runs in the colours of J. P. McManus.

Nestled in the Irish countryside, a day out at Knockanard point-to-point is a perfect family occasion, get up close and personal with the future stars of the Irish National Hunt scene.

Unusually for an early spring four-year-old maiden, IDEAL VERT could be turned out just seven days after making his debut at Ballinaboola. The well-backed favourite on that occasion, he kept on well in the closing stages to come through into second. 13 of the remaining 14 entries represent newcomers, and the market will provide a good guide as to what is expected from them.

This has a very open look to it and so the many newcomers that feature among the entries are likely to play a sizeable part in the finish, however of those with form, GIOVINCO would look to set the standard. He had finished fifth to the impressive Madmansgame at Boulta before Christmas, with the two horses that finished immediately in front of him on that occasion both subsequently winning maidens.

MIGHTY STOWAWAY holds a number of potential engagements this weekend and if taking up this entry it would be hard not to side with him. Seeking a fifth win of the season he was dominant when defeating the potentially re-opposing Fennos Storm at Carrigarostig and sets a high standard. On The Sod is six from six in the pointing fields and would seem the biggest threat ahead of Cloudy Tuesday and Killultagh Vic.

KNOCKRAHA KATIE dominated from the front on her stable debut at Ballindenisk last month when winning by a distance and it is hard to oppose her here in her bid to double up. Cappajune Lady gained a deserved initial success when beating 17 rivals at Turtulla and that has to be respected, whilst the returning Clounts Glory and Lingstown winner Wildfield Ivy are others in the mix.

USEITORLOOSEIT was surrounded by subsequent winners Jeremy Central and Truckers Tangle when he finished a close third at Moig South in late November and although he could not step forward from it at Aghabullogue since, this could be a good opportunity for him. Mizuma would seem the biggest danger after he faired well in winners company at Ballyvodock, whilst an improved Miss Benjo, Chitchat Sally and Hattons Gardens also cannot be discounted.

JESSMAE brings quite a high level of form into an adjacent contest having finished placed at Aghabullogue in a five-year-old maiden on his debut last month. That despite a serious blunder at the last and he is the standout candidate for this. Present Fair ran respectably at Ballyvodock and will enjoy the step back in grade as the obvious alternative.
