Track Biography:

Laois Hunt Foxhounds hold ther bi-annualy Point-to-Point race meetings on the grounds of Stradbally Hall, the venue for the fixtures for over twenty years. Btoh meetings ran at Stradbally are held in the Spring, the first in mid-April and the second in mid-May. Ease of access and the unique setting make this a very popular event.

Stradbally Hall, as it appears today, dates from the middle of the 19th century. Stradbally Hall has been the seat of the Cosby family since the reign of Edward VI. We are very lucky to have such a picturesque setting where spectators have a view of the full course which runs over beautiful parkland.

One of the joys of point-to-point racing is the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the future stars of Irish racing. Fundamentalist begun his racing career between the flags in the Irish countryside. The Cheltenham Festival winner recorded three wins in the pointing field, the second of which was achieved at Stradbally.

How To Get There

By Road:

Stradbally, on the N80, is located 12km from Portlaoise. With the exception of those travelling from the South East, exit the M7 at Junction 15 and take the N80 straight into the town. Stradbally Hall is on the right as you drive down the main street.

If travelling from the South East, take the N80 from Carlow or the N78 from Kilkenny taking a right turn in Castlecomer, to join the N80. Stradbally Hall is on the left as you drive up the main street.

By Air:

Stradbally point-to-point is located an hour and fifteen minutes from Dublin Airport.

Free parking is available for all spectators. Disabled persons will be accommodated in a suitable location close to the track and facilities. It is advised that they make themselves known to the stewards who will be clearly identified by “hi-vis” stewards jackets.

Temporary toilets are provided in a number of locations on site.

Changing facilities for babies and toddlers can be provided, if needed, in the ladies changing area.

Disabled persons requiring toilet facilities will be accommodated in the adjoining stable yard at the Equestrian Centre.

Outside caterers provide hot food options to order in the form of burgers and chips and similar fast food options. These are located near the parade ring and bookmakers.

The venue lends itself very well to family picnics when the weather is favourable. Separate catering facilities are provided for sponsors and officials.

Also, why not arrive early and enjoy a picnic from your car booth before enjoying a full days racing !

Coffee Express offer a selection of coffees and hot drinks while the fast food caterers offer soft drinks.

There is no bar on site but there are a number of local hostelries in Stradbally where you can either celebrate a win or alternatively wonder where it all went wrong.

There is no official dress code. Smart casual attire is advised but most importantly, it should be suited to the weather on the day.
Dogs are more than welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.
Stradbally Hall is a beautiful venue and when the weather is favorable, it is a wonderful setting for an afternoon picnic. We encourage this and have seen many groups enjoy everything from mini BBQ on a sunny afternoon to hot-toddies during chillier weather.
Kid?s entertainment is provided typically in the form of a bouncy castle or a similar attraction depending on the weather.
There is no ATM at the course but there is an ATM in Supervalu which is located across the road from the entrance to Stradbally Hall.

Stradbally Hall is a very picturesque venue that is easy to access from all routes. It is well known as the location for the Electric Picnic Festival which is held in September.

With a superb view of the track, this event is ideal for those who would like to enjoy a picnic while watching the racing.

Parking is available very close to the final fence and finish line.

Children’s entertainment is provided. This is typically a bouncy castle or similar attraction depending on the weather at the time.

Occasionally, supplementary entertainment such as cossack riding, side-saddle and best dressed ladies and gents competitions are organised.

Further information can be found on Laois Hunt Facebook page closer to the date of the event.

KIRIGLOTE outran his odds to finish a very encouraging third at Portrush a fortnight ago having been sent off as an unconsidered 12/1 shot for what looked a competitive heat. The potentially re-opposing Old Jewry was just half-a-length behind him on that occasion, but had the benefit of two previous runs during the autumn, whilst Poncharello, The Strap Man and Tomgarrow are others to have all run well on good ground previously. Night Manager and Major Fawcett are two interesting track recruits that are rated 101 and 98 over hurdles. The former set to make his stable debut having previously been running for Micky Hammond.

DE BARLEY BASKET is a well-bred individual being closely related to Global Citizen and A Hare Breath, who both came through point-to-points, and whilst following a number of solid displays to date, this would appear to be on paper his best opportunity to get his head in front. Raised With Praise was not beaten too far at Loughrea in the autumn and is fresh from a break, whilst Hellenic Fire could make his seasonal re-appearance.

JIMMIL takes a notable step back in company, as having been well beaten at Downpatrick in a Hunter Chase last month, he could take some beating by appearing in hunt company here, if repeating his fine second at Belclare. The mares Glorious Ziva and Any Time bring snippets of form into this and will have the benefit of a five-pound allowance, whilst the track recruit, Cloudybackwest, could come into the reckoning for a race like this on what is his first outing for new connections.

LONGHOUSE MUSIC has appeared to be back to her best when recording back-to-back victories on consecutive weekends at Portrush and Courtown last Sunday. This has seen her bounce back from her Dungarvan defeat which came at the hands of Holly Flight. The latter ran a huge race against Fennos Storm and it will be very interesting to see how they fare once again, whilst Gabrielleamee won a Lisronagh recently and is a proven good-ground performer.

WOODBROOK BOY was no match for the now three-time winner Notice To Close when finishing third at Lismore most recently, but this does not look as strong a race, so it would be no surprise to see him back among the winners. Crutches Lad had won well at Borris House and may be worth a second chance having failed to complete at Ballyragget, whilst the mare Touchy is returning from a spell under rules.

SHOPPING AROUND found favour in the market ahead of her debut at Portrush a fortnight ago and she ran a race full of promise, simply bumping into a potentially smart looking individual on that occasion. She holds a number of entries this weekend, however this would look to be by far the most straight forward. Of the remainder, Five Horizons may be the big danger as she was only beaten by five lengths in a bunched finished at Dungarvan on her debut and with her stable in good form of late, she should hold definite claims.
