Track Biography:

Laois Hunt Foxhounds hold ther bi-annualy Point-to-Point race meetings on the grounds of Stradbally Hall, the venue for the fixtures for over twenty years. Btoh meetings ran at Stradbally are held in the Spring, the first in mid-April and the second in mid-May. Ease of access and the unique setting make this a very popular event.

Stradbally Hall, as it appears today, dates from the middle of the 19th century. Stradbally Hall has been the seat of the Cosby family since the reign of Edward VI. We are very lucky to have such a picturesque setting where spectators have a view of the full course which runs over beautiful parkland.

One of the joys of point-to-point racing is the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the future stars of Irish racing. Fundamentalist begun his racing career between the flags in the Irish countryside. The Cheltenham Festival winner recorded three wins in the pointing field, the second of which was achieved at Stradbally.

How To Get There

By Road:

Stradbally, on the N80, is located 12km from Portlaoise. With the exception of those travelling from the South East, exit the M7 at Junction 15 and take the N80 straight into the town. Stradbally Hall is on the right as you drive down the main street.

If travelling from the South East, take the N80 from Carlow or the N78 from Kilkenny taking a right turn in Castlecomer, to join the N80. Stradbally Hall is on the left as you drive up the main street.

By Air:

Stradbally point-to-point is located an hour and fifteen minutes from Dublin Airport.

Free parking is available for all spectators. Disabled persons displaying the relevant windscreen sticker will be accommodated in a suitable location close to the track and facilities. It is advised that they make themselves known to the stewards who will be clearly identified by “hi-vis” stewards jackets.

Temporary toilets are provided in a number of locations on site.

Changing facilities for babies and toddlers can be provided, if needed, in the ladies changing area.

Disabled persons requiring toilet facilities will be accommodated in the adjoining stable yard at the Equestrian Centre.

Outside caterers provide hot food options to order in the form of burgers and chips and similar fast food options. These are located near the parade ring and bookmakers.

The venue lends itself very well to family picnics when the weather is favourable.  Separate catering facilities are provided for sponsors and officials.

Coffee Express offer a selection of coffees and hot drinks while the fast food caterers offer soft drinks.

There is no bar on site but there are a number of local hostelries in Stradbally where you can either celebrate a win or alternatively wonder where it all went wrong.

There is no official dress code. Smart casual attire is advised but most importantly, it should be suited to the weather on the day.
Dogs are more than welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.
Stradbally Hall is a beautiful venue and when the weather is favorable, it is a wonderful setting for an afternoon picnic. We encourage this and have seen many groups enjoy everything from mini BBQ on a sunny afternoon to hot-toddies during chillier weather.
Kid's entertainment is provided typically in the form of a bouncy castle or a similar attraction depending on the weather.
There is no ATM at the course but there is an ATM in Supervalu which is located across the road from the entrance to Stradbally Hall.

Stradbally Hall is a very picturesque venue that is easy to access from all routes. It is well known as the location for the Electric Picnic Festival which is held in September.

With a superb view of the track, this event is ideal for those who would like to enjoy a picnic while watching the racing.

Parking is available very close to the final fence and finish line.

Children’s entertainment is provided. This is typically a bouncy castle or similar attraction depending on the weather at the time.

Further information can be found on Laois Hunt Facebook page closer to the date of the event.

Occasionally, supplementary entertainment such as cossack riding, side-saddle and best dressed ladies and gents competitions are organised.

SHETLAND BUS was not beaten far by Reikers Island at Borris House before Christmas, and with his conqueror on that occasion boosting the form by winning over hurdles at Fontwell, his return to action following a mid-season break could be rewarded with a maiden victory. Stable companions Robin Du Roi and Gun Merchant bring a solid level of form into the race and should be there or there abouts, whilst Stoney Rover, whose handler won a similar race around here last month, ran well on debut at Dromahane and should be respected.

CHINENSIS has won two of his three starts to date including a four-year-old maiden, and it is very hard to look past him adding a third winner to his career haul in this. Simply Gooch was unlucky at Largy last month, Tunder Strike won his maiden in good style at Lisronagh, and Owl Creek Bridge may prove to be better than his run at Durrow, and they would seem to be the pick of the dangers.

In a wide open looking race, WITCHES GLEN will look to atone for her final fence fall in a similar contest around here last month. Track recruit Keyboard Warrior was taken out of the race early inside the final mile at Largy, but with his rules form it would be no surprise to see him run a big race. Bunninadden disappointed last time, whilst Tango Louvo should improve for his run at Moira, when he was returning from a long absence.

Red Devil Boys, Vinnie Luck and A Decent Excuse, are the three last-time out winners and it would be a surprise if the winner did not come from within that trio. Slight preference is given to A DECENT EXCUSE, as he was running to a very high level at the start of the season and showed that he was returning to form when among the winners at Stowlin last Sunday. Vinnie Luck is the clear danger having won back-to-back match races in recent weeks.

TORNADO SKY did herself no favours by racing very keenly on her debut at Largy last month. If she was to settle better on her second outing here, she would have to be strongly fancied, as she was well-supported in the market ahead of that introduction. Whispering Hope was showing the signs that she was coming back to the promise of her second to Buckie Cullen at Knockinroe in the autumn before coming down late last Sunday. She would seem to be the main danger alongside, Boston Heather, Siamsa Cois Laoi and Witches Glen, who does have an easier alternative in the adjacent race.

Preview

We have seen plenty from a number of these horses, and it may be one of the less exposed horses, such as CAPTAINS RUN, that comes out on top. The Curtain Time gelding jumped well from the front at Monksgrange last Sunday, and having only gone down by the narrowest of margins, he would seem to be the standout performer in this. Arch Melody was brought down in a similar race around here last month, but would be a danger on his Inch outing, whilst Coach Road, Enbarr Of Mannan and Ozean are others to note.
