Track Biography:

The first Westmeath Foxhounds point-to-point took place in Loughegar in 1875. The Westmeath Foxhounds point to point committee have been holding meetings in Castletown Geoghegan for almost forty years. Prior to that, meetings were held at Mullingar Racecourse at Newbrook and Cullion, now the venue of Mullingar Showgrounds and Mullingar Rugby grounds.

During our Spring fixture we have one of the most prestigious contests run in the point-to-point circuit, the Barbour Cup. It has been the race where many racing stars have returned to point-to-pointing to run in Open Lightweights and have taken part in this historic race.

In addition, many young horses who have won their maiden here, have continued very successful careers on the track. For example previous course winner,  It Takes Time won the Ascot Gold Cup and wasthird in the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aswell as finshing fourth in the English Grand National. Royal Caviar, who won his maiden in 2013, went on to win four times on the track as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 Arkle chase at the Cheltenham festival.

STRAND ROAD had seemed to be booked for second on his debut at Taylorstown last May only to come down at the final fence. The winner of the race was subsequently sold for 215,000 and compensation could be attained in the opening race of the new season. Wild Nephin failed to finish at Loughanmore having finished placed in a small field Comea maiden on debut, whilst the E115,000 store purchase Brave Fortune made his debut in the Goffs Defender Bumper at the Punchestown Festival and it will be interesting to see how he fares on his first start in this sphere.

FINE AS WINE and Emilys Choice would look to be the class acts of the field on paper, but both have to bounce back having ended last season on a disappointing note. The latter was only denied by the narrowest margin possible around here in the spring but the marginal preference goes to Fine As Wine as the form of her opening two efforts is strong with the two horses that finished behind her in Belclare having already come out and won. She should do likewise here.

GLOBAL ASSEMBLY has not finished outside of the first two in three starts since joining David Christie, and although returning from a near nine-month absence, his form in open company should see him too good for his rivals here. Intersky Sunset was no match for Sharjah at the Galway Festival but has to be respected back in this sphere, whilst Dear Ryta too a big step forward when winning at Ballindenisk in May and could be another mare with place claims in this.

ISHOLO DU VIVIEN acted well on quick ground at Tyrella in March when only missing out on a maiden victory before falling at Taylorstown most recently. That experience should stand to him on his return. Cicero Grimes was likely better suited by the ground at Ballycrystal having pulled up in soft ground before that. He could be factor here alongside Fralimonti Bilbery.

Having been placed over hurdles at the Cheltenham festival in a Pertemps Final, THE BOSSES OSCAR has not quite scaled the same heights over fences in spite of being sent off as the favourite for the 2021 Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown, but the return the pointing fields could see him register a first success over fence in a race that his stable have won for the past two years running. Ronald Pump has plenty of Grade 1 form to his name, and the switch to the pointing fields could see him get more competitive than recent track outings, whilst the evergreen Some Are Lucky has a good record around here having won twice at this venue, including in this race back in 2020, and certainly cannot be discounted.

COMMANDER OF TEN is a newcomer to this sphere having run seven times under rules for Michael Scudamore, placing in a maiden hurdle at Cheltenham behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Fennor Cross last season. Whilst he was well beaten at Southwell last time in first-time cheekpieces, he looks to have the strongest form in the book. Declan Queally did particularly well with new additions to his stable in this sphere last season and that could make Beaus Candle popular on stable debut, whilst Flash Conroy would be a big player if bouncing back to his early promise having disappointed when last season in Aghabullogue.
