Track Biography:

Point-to-Point racing has a long and rich history at the scenic location of Fairwood Park, Tinahely, since 1989. Fairwood Park also plays host to the Tinahely Agricultural Show each summer which is one of Ireland's longest running agricultural show.

Jamie Codd, who is the second winning-most point-to-point rider in the history of the sport became the first modern day rider to ride all six winners on the one card at Tinahely in October 2011.

Previous track winners to have won at Tinahely include former Grade One winner Fundamentalist and Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up On His Own.

Tinahely is situated in the heart of the Wicklow countryside, the garden of Ireland. Located just an hour and half from the bustle of Dublin city, Tinahely is a pretty village in south west Wicklow that offers a variety of walking opportunities and a gateway to the beautiful Irish landscape.

How To Get There

By Road

From Dublin – Take the M50 southbound and turn onto the M11. At Junction 16, take the R772 to Rathnew. Continue on the R752/753 where the track will be sign posted.

From Waterford – Take the N9 until junction 5 where you need to take the N80 exit for Carlow/Rosslare.

By Air

Tinahely point-to-point is located an hour and forty minutes from Dublin airport.

Facilities

Combined with our free parking, we are lucky to have a clear viewing track that allows race goers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.

There are certain parts of the track that can be used to facilitate disabled parking so as to cater for every eager race goer.

The bookmakers ring is conveniently situated in close proximity to the parade. Check out all the runners before deciding where to place your hard earned cash!

Food

In between races, spectators can avail of a variety of catering options provided.

Outside caterers provide tasty beef burgers, sausages, chips with tea, coffee and soft drinks on the day.

The venue lends itself very well to family picnics when the weather is favourable.

Beverages

The onsite catering providers will provide range of hot and cold drinks.

As a result of the very strict drink driving laws a few years ago we decided to discontinue providing or selling alcohol. 

However people can bring their own and some wonderful and exotic beverages can be seen taken out of the back of cars and trucks.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

As warm as possible. High heels probably not advisable however it is lovely to see some people dressed up in their country tweeds.

Yes all dogs welcome once they are kept on a lead.

Of course. We just ask that no rubbish is left behind.

No, but because the children can get up close to the action we find they love watching the races.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in Tinahely on your way to the races.

Amenities

As a large number of the people attending our point-to-point are there purely for the races we try to concentrate solely on providing the best racing possible.

Over the years, after the last official race we have ran a very popular race confined to our hunting members riding their hunters.  We have not been in a position to run this for the last few years but hope to start doing so again.

Colin Bowe has entered no fewer than six horses here and his stable have been in red-hot form in the age group of late, winning three four-year-old races in the age group included a one-two at Ballycrystal last Sunday to ensure whichever of his horses is declared in this deserves maximum respect. Rob James, Harley Dunne and Gerald Quinn are other handlers represented here who have already had four-year-old winners, with the latter having entered Mount Slemish, a half-brother of Brian Power.

AN MHI holds plenty of entries but if appearing here he would be hard to oppose. He was sent off as the favourite for a red-hot maiden at Tattersalls in November when finishing fourth behind three horses who each sold for over 300,000 pounds each in the sales ring subsequently. Wide To West finished strongly at Comea recently and should be suited by the stronger test that this track presents, whilst Plain Or Battered, Forcing Bull and Lets Do This are others for the short list.

SOME MAN was at his very best when simply destroying the very capable Poli Roi at Kirkistown earlier this month. Having also previously won around here it is hard to look elsewhere. Its All Guesswork faces different conditions to what he won on in Damma House back in November, a victory which saw him beat the Tetretema Cup winner Solomn Grundy, whilst Amaulino won on his debut in open company at Bellharbour and cannot be discounted.

FAITH LOVING missed opportunities to run at Oldtown over the past two weekends with that fixture twice falling foul of the weather, but his belated return to the pointing fields should be rewarded here as he put up a big effort when taking on proven open performers when fourth in the Down Royal Hunter Chase over Christmas. Everything Now had the measure of Garm Colombe at Bellharbour and will be expected to confirm those placings whilst Red Ford Lad and Mizuma both come into this in good form having won at Ballycrystal last Sunday.

With Blazing Yeats failing to make much of an impression at Ballindenisk last time on his stable debut, preference goes to GUNNERY OFFICER in this. He looked booked for third at Cork last year when falling at the final fence, and horses that would have finished directly in front and behind of him have since won maidens to frank the form. He looks hard to oppose on his return. The similarly absent Parkgate is another to note, whilst Jack Doyen has two placed efforts to his name and can also step forward.
