Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

Combined with our free parking, we are lucky to have a clear viewing track where all race goers can get up close to the action with our final fence located close to the car park so you can enjoy the thrill of the action from the comfort of your car.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.

Food

In between races, spectators can avail of the catering options that we have on offer.

Our outside catering vendor offers a wide range of burgers, rolls, sausages and chips.
 

Beverages

For those looking for something to keep them warm, there will tea and coffee available throughout the day.

Our on site caterer will also have a selection of refreshments on offer.

For anyone looking for a little tipple, why not try a drink from our Gin Van which offers flavoured tonics along with a range of premium gins.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

No, we do not have an official dress code we just advise our race goers to stay warm and dry for your days racing and to prepare yourself for all types of Irish weather.

Dogs are very welcome, but need to be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments. We also have a range of catering options on course.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in Portavogie on your way to the races.

Amenities

Kirkistown point-to-point is an ideal day out for all the family, giving you the opportunity to sample the heart of national hunt racing. Admission is £10 with all children U16 free.

Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit is a permanent motorsport circuit located next door to the point-to-point which is between the villages of Kirkistown and Portavogie, on the Ards Peninsula of County Down.

The circuit is owned and operated by the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland, who opened the circuit in 1953 on the site of the former RAF Kirkistown Royal Air Force airfield.

ZAIDI ran well on debut in a well regarded and fast run maiden at Tattersalls and could be ready to step up here. Bare Meadows was a promising second at Rathcannon on debut with Hermes Allen back in third so they are open to improvement as that experience should stand to them. Colin Bowe is represented by both Champagne Town and Dont Walk Away who have both produced strong placed efforts to recommend while they are joined in the entries by many debutantes worth noting in the market.

TOWNHILL PENNY was third on each of her last two starts and was not beaten far at Tattersalls last time so comes here in good form and has the measure of Carlotalin on recent form. She can be expected to be a leading fancy here. KINALEARTY was not beaten far on debut at Moira and would not have to find much improvement to open his account here. Bally Ferris was a fair third in an 18-runner maiden at Tattersalls last time so can expect to be very competitive here also. Run To Glory ran well to finish fourth in a Damma House maiden while Grave La Klass and Leitrim Chief have notable bumper form with the latter beaten just thirteen lengths by My Mate Mozzie.

FAITH LOVING has yet to run a bad race. He won a maiden on his second start at Moira and was only narrowly denied on his winners debut at Loughanmore proving he is capable at this level. Drumlee Castle, Justwest and The Creadon Rogue are all coming here on the back of a win with the latter having won by fourteen lengths so will be a danger to the selection.

Brain Power is another local runner with a big chance on his Tattersalls second placing in particular. Solomn Grundy is smart on his day and was second at Umma house last time while the return of Milan Dancer will be interesting for the future. Som Man was fifteen lengths behind Mighty Stowaway at Tinahely and the latter has won again since so with reasonable improvement expected from what was his seasonal return Some Man could well make this a very competitive open.

BALLYMIST was second at Portrush and went on to finish third in a point-to-point bumper since at Fairyhouse behind Glenglass so looks as though he could be hard to beat. Dukehill ran well on his seasonal return at Moira but has twice since exited at the first fence so needs a clear round here to compete again. Hollybank King was second to The Creadon Rogue at Damma house and will expect to open his account in the coming months also.
