Track Biography:

The first Westmeath Foxhounds point-to-point took place in Loughegar in 1875. The Westmeath Foxhounds point to point committee have been holding meetings in Castletown Geoghegan for almost forty years. Prior to that, meetings were held at Mullingar Racecourse at Newbrook and Cullion, now the venue of Mullingar Showgrounds and Mullingar Rugby grounds.

During our Spring fixture we have one of the most prestigious contests run in the point-to-point circuit, the Barbour Cup. It has been the race where many racing stars have returned to point-to-pointing to run in Open Lightweights and have taken part in this historic race.

In addition, many young horses who have won their maiden here, have continued very successful careers on the track. For example previous course winner,  It Takes Time won the Ascot Gold Cup and wasthird in the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aswell as finshing fourth in the English Grand National. Royal Caviar, who won his maiden in 2013, went on to win four times on the track as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 Arkle chase at the Cheltenham festival.

One of the real attractions of point-to-point racing is the opportunity to get up close and personal with furture stars of Irish horse racing in a relaxed and family friendly environment.

We have an extensive car parking area which offers a brilliant view of the whole track. This allows you to bring your picnic in the boot of your vehicle which you can enjoy with your family and friends during the day’s racing.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.

We have outside caterers who supply a variety of tasty hot foods such as burgers, sausages and chips. There will also be a range of confectionaries on offer all of which are reasonably priced.

Alternatively, why not come along early and enjoy a picnic before the action gets under way or take a break midway through the day to refuel from the boot of your car. Our extensive car park is the perfect location to relish the atmosphere of the races whilst entertaining friends and family.

Our outside caterers sell teas, coffees and soft drinks to keep you warm during your days racing.

There are also three pubs in the nearby village of Castletown-Geoghegan where there is always a great welcome and atmosphere for patrons before and after racing.

No, we do not have an official dress code we just advise our race goers to stay warm and dry for your days racing and to prepare yourself for all types of Irish weather.
Yes, we allow dogs to attend the point-to-point. However, we do ask that all dogs are kept on a lead at all times.
Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments. We also have a range of catering options on course if you fancy picking-up something tasty on the go.
At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.
No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop at an ATM on your way to the races if you are passing through Kilbeggan or Mullingar.

A day at Castletown-Geoghegan point-to-point races is the ideal day out for all the family in the heart of the Irish countryside.

You have the opportunity to get a close up of the action when the runners are being saddled and paraded in the parade ring before their race. There is great excitement for racegoers as once you have picked out your favourite horse you can proceed to the bookies to have a little flutter.

Nothing beats the excitement of the closing stages of a race and our track ensures that you have a birdseye view. Our final fence and finishing straight are both fantastic viewing points for both spectators in their cars and spectators on foot.

Castletown-Geoghegans course is only a ten-minute drive from the picturesque Lough Ennell where the hugley popular Lilliput Adventure centre is located. If you would like to make a weekend of your time in the Midlands, Lilliput has something to offer for all of the family. If Kayaking or obstacle courses arent what you are after, why not call into Belvedere House and gardens located only 15 minutes from the point-to-point.

Pat Doyle has his team of four-year-olds in red hot form, and it would be no surprise to see him add to his tally with DIOL KER in this. A promising second on his debut at Cragmore, the well-related French-bred was unlucky to come down at Horse and Jockey more recently, but can bounce back here in the local Gigginstown House Stud colours. Tyrella third On The Slopes would seem the pick of the others with form, whilst the many newcomers will be worth a market check before the off.

ARCTIC ROAD and Golan Warrior are two horses with some experience behind them and the slight preference is given to the former who has run consistently in three outings to date. Five Gold Bars was a faller on his debut when sent off as the favourite ensuring that he could be of interest here, whilst Norman Geraghty won this race two years ago with Pinch Of Ginger and he could be represented by newcomer Larry Looby in this years renewal.

DIDARRO only had to beat one rival to come out on top in this race 12 months ago, but he could have a tougher task on his hands in this if both Donjon and STAR WIZARD were to appear. The former only won his maiden last Sunday at Durrow, but is sure to have improved for that first run of the season, whilst Star Wizard is a Dowth Hall maiden winner who represents the in-form Peter Flood yard. He has been running well prior to two final fence departures of late, and with a clean round of jumping, he could be the one to side with.

DRUNKEN TATTOO offered plenty of encouragement with her debut fourth in what seemed a red hot race at Borris House last month in which the winner was subsequently sold for 130,000 pounds. Carrying the colours of Douglas Taylor, the same silks that were aboard Samcro when he won his point-to-point, she could be the answer to this puzzle. The Best In Town could step-up from her Ballinaboola debut, whilst Belleview is a mare that ran well as a four-year-old at Corbeagh House back in 2016.

A high quality entry for the 2018 running of the Barbour Cup which could see the point-to-point debut of the high class UXIZANDRE. The 10-year-old, who won the 2015 Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when with Alan King, has joined the Padraig Roche yard and could be a high class recruit. Fresh from success in the Down Royal hunter chase, Eddies Miracle would look to bring the pick of the recent form, closely followed by Samanntom, who was a convincing winner at Borris last month.

The returning MYOLDMAN, is a horse that has finished second in two of his three starts to date, and if he was able to repeat his latest Lingstown effort, he would be tough to beat on his first outing in 12 months. Krisquin could be a danger on his Tyrella run, but he did disappoint at Belclare more recently, whilst Our Harry could step up from his fourth placing in this race 12 months ago.
