Track Biography:

The Avondhu foxhounds were formed in 1920, with point-to-point racing being held as part of the Cork Waterford circuit from the late 1930's until the present day. In the late 1950’s the meeting was held at Knockanard, Fermoy and racing was over banks.

In the 1960's the venue changed once again, this time to Lisnagar outside Rathcormac. The fixture remained here for a number of years before moving to Moorpark, located just outside Fermoy, where it stayed until 1994 where it return to the original venue at Knockanard, the current race venue.

Our fixture has attracted some good horses over the years including Keen Leader, For Bill, Missed That and Joacci. Missed That won on his only start between the flags as a five-year-old at Knockanard, he subsequently won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.

For Bill was a prolific race mare, clocking up eleven career wins including, two point-to-points, three national hunt flat races (bumpers), three hurdles and three chases, registering back type over hurdles and fences. The presenting mare has breed one runner thus far, Speak Easy, who won his maiden point-to-point at Kilworth in March of 2017 for the Donnnchadh Doyle yard and was subsequently sold to Joseph O'Brien for 220,000 pounds and now runs in the colours of J. P. McManus.

Nestled in the Irish countryside, a day out at Knockanard point-to-point is a perfect family occasion, get up close and personal with the future stars of the Irish National Hunt scene.

The Colin Bowe-trained DUC DALLIER has the standout piece of form in this race, having finished a promising third on his debut at Portrush in the autumn. The runner-up in that same contest, Brace Yourself, has franked the form by winning his bumper at Down Royal by 24 lengths, before finishing third in a valuable Grade 2 contest at the Dublin Racing Festival last weekend. He could be closely matched with Speedy Cargo, if bouncing back from his Ballinaboola run. Crossley Tender, who posted a career best at Aghabullogue, is improving and is another for the place claims.

ROSFOYLE was not that far behind Madera Express, a winner at Ballinaboola last Sunday, when making her debut at Moira in the autumn, and with that piece of form having received a timely boost, she could be the one to side with here. Recent Bellharbour second Rollercoster put up a big display on her first start of the season and is sure to be a big danger, whilst Kilbree Shadow is a contender on her December effort in Boulta.

Having beaten two subsequent winners when landing her maiden at Turtulla in November, it was no surprise to see Cloudy Day go close at Nenagh late last month when taking on geldings. Back against her own sex here, she can record a second career success. There may not be a lot separating Cee Jay McBride, Our Henrietta and Go Goonagain West who would all have place claims.

ASK ROBIN had shaped like a smart sort when making his debut on this card 12 months ago, chasing home Dicey OReilly, a horse who has gone on to finish fifth in a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival last weekend. Although beaten at short odds on his reappearance at Templencarriga, this looks a very winnable race for Ask Robin here and it is hard to look past him for this.

It could be worth siding with WETONCALL for this, as he had finished second behind the recent Leicester novice hurdle winner, Rosmuc Relay, on his latest outing at Boulta in December. Arch Chancelor could well prove to be the main danger, as he is likely better than his fourth at Tallow last Sunday, having made a bad mistake with two to jump, an error which cost him all chance. Ballyhoulihan and Sabrejay are others with place claims.
