Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

VALDIEU was sent off as a short-priced favourite for his debut in a competitive contest at Borris House recently when coming to grief with just over a mile remaining. Whilst he was not tested on that occasion, a big run was clearly expected. Clondaws Anwser was running well at Cragmore when coming down at the second-last. The step-up in trip is expected to suit. Overworkdunderpaid finished an encouraging third on his debut at Tinahely and he too can be expected to step-up.

The Ian Ferguson-trained MANETTI held every chance on his debut around here last month when coming down at the final fence, having jumped that obstacle upsides the eventual winner. That form would see him set the benchmark on previous efforts. The well-bred newcomer Sizing Rome represents in-form connections, and as an expensive store purchase he has to be feared. Alone No More has found some real consistency of late and has filled the placing in each of his last three starts, whilst the dual runner-up Minella Mischief and Freewheelin Dylan, who has changed yards since his course and distance second, are others for the short list.

BASTANTE has failed to finish each of her last two starts, however she was only narrowly beaten around here in late November and if she was able to return to that form, she would have to be expected to go close. He Knows My Name was in the process of running a big race at Armagh on her pointing debut earlier this month when coming down at the final fence. Prior to that departure, she had shown enough potential to go close in a race of this nature, whilst Aines Choice bounced back to form at Tinahely on her latest outing which was encouraging.

An intriguing contest with each of the potential runners in this small field contest, all having shown plenty of ability in the past. FELIX YOUNGER is a high class recruit to the open division having been last seen running in the Champion Chase at last years Cheltenham Festival. A former Grade 1 winner when with Willie Mullins, he could be another exciting open performer for Colin McBratney. Chosen Dream beat the subsequent Fairyhouse Hunter Chase victor Aupcharlie around here last month, whilst the mare Maple Mons was running a huge race at Borris House recently before coming down in the closing stages.

CAPTAIN CJ defeated his stable companion and subsequent Armagh winner Drimsree Lad by a wide-margin at Oldtown last month on his first start for the in-form Dermot McLoughlin yard and he sets the bench mark for this on that basis. Debut winner Hugo N Taz could be the main danger for Tom Keating, whilst Bi Quini Tiep and Patgary are recent maiden winners who can also figure here.

Keephimbachwilliam appeared to take a significant step forward at Armagh recently when finishing a close third behind the Champion Pointer Anseanachai Cliste. That was her first start for the Lady Jane Alexander yard and if that effort can be repeated, he could prove to be the one to beat. Rossamilan and Top Tikket both bring course form to the race having finished second in either divides of the older maiden around here last month and they could prove to be the big dangers.
