Track Biography:

The firsts set of National Hunt Committee rules were published in 1889 and Kilkenny Hunt with its long illustrious history of holding point-to-point meets can trace its first meeting back to then. Point-to-point meetings were held under the master ship of Ikey Bell at Lacken, near Bonnettstown in 1909 and from 1914 meetings were at Bishopslough.

Thereafter meetings continued to circulate around the country, 1926 in Ballyfacey, 1927 Rahelty, 1948 Stonecarthy, 1949-1959 Wollengrange, Gowran 1960-1989. From there the point-to-point moved to Brambelstown and Kilbline and then to its current location in Grennan, Thomastown.

We hold two meetings during the season, one in November and one in May. Our tracks over the years have seen many winners go on to establish themselves amongst the elite of the racing world, dual Welsh National winner Mountainous and Tranquil Sea to name but a few.

How To Get There

By Road

From Dublin– Exit the M9 at junction 7 towards Thomastown/Gowran/Paulstown R448, at the roundabout take the first exit, go through the next roundabout and at the third roundabout take the third exit onto the Gorsebridge road/ R448, continue to follow R448 through Gowran and Thomastown. Exit Thomastown in the Waterford direction R448 over the bridge into Mill Street. Turn left onto the Mall and take the first left onto Castle Avenue (sign posted GAA grounds).

From Waterford – At junction 10 take the R699 exit for Thomastown, at the roundabout take the third exit onto R699 go through one roundabout at the next roundabout take the second exit following signs for Thomastown. At the next roundabout take the first exit. Continue on to the cross roads and turn left onto the R448 for approximately 6km. Turn right onto the Mall and take the first left onto Castle avenue (sign posted GAA grounds)

Our point-to-point is located an hour and fifty minutes from Dublin airport.

Preview

The Gigginstown-owned EVISCERATING created a big impression when going down by the narrowest of margins on his debut at The Pigeons last season when with Gordon Elliott, and he should prove very tough to beat if repeating that effort on his first start for Mouse Morris. Patriots Prayer chased home the impressive Jerrysback on his debut at Loughanmore last month, and he is likely sure to be involved, whilst Alone No More is worth a second chance, as this son of Gold Well was running a big race on debut at Tinahely, before disappointing at Rathcannon a fortnight later. He is likely better than that effort indicates.

In a race which does not contain a lot of recent placed form, the track recruit MALPENSA may be the one to side with. Trained by Tim Doyle, she has been far from disgraced in four starts inside the rails including a close fourth in a Tipperary Bumper in May, when just 6 lengths in arrears of Miss Eyecatcher who is now a three-time Bumper winner. Patsy Milan has not quite been able to repeat some of her better form from last season and was soundly beaten a Portrush last month, however she is capable on her day, whilst Nana Joan and Blue Ghost are both open to improvement.

The British track recruit BRANDENBURG GATE catches the eye in this contest, as the son of Germany ran four times for Charlie Longsdon, finishing a fair fourth on two occasions, and it will be interesting to see how he fares here on his pointing debut. Stable companion Land League brings the strongest of the points form into the race as he has finished placed on his last two starts including last Sunday at Dowth Hall. Bricks And Beams stepped-up on his debut to finish fourth at Portrush when finishing just a length in arrears of Land League, whilst The Ryanline is another with placed form to his name.

In a race featuring no fewer than four last time out winners, it will be difficult to oppose TALKISCHEAP who actually drops back in company as he looks to preserve his 100% strike rate between the flags. The Getaway gelding is in receipt of the four-year-old allowance and defeated the three-time winner One Cool Clarkson in very impressive fashion at Portrush in winners of three company. Rosc Catha has been running well in open company and is one of the principal dangers alongside Cant Pay Wont Pay who should enjoy conditions.

The David Christie-trained VALMY BAIE posted a most impressive display when winning at Portush last month, and a repeat of that effort would see him as very tough to beat. Ourmanmassini is in great heart at present and has already won two opens by wide-margins this season including at Dowth Hall last Sunday, and he will be suited by the ground conditions. Sizing Solution defeated Valmy Baie at Toomebridge and it will be interesting to see how he will fair here on a sounder surface, whilst Forjoetheplumber won this race 12 months ago, although this looks a stronger renewal.

LOUGHMORE RUN should have two second-paced efforts to his name but for falling at the last at Ballyraggett on his penultimate start last season. He ran well in testing conditions at Loughrea on his seasonal re-appearance which should leave him spot on for this. Trixiebarry has finished placed on no fewer than seven attempts, and he is likely sure to be involved in the place battle once again. The Margaret Flynn-trained pairing of Amazurka and Royal Haslar are others to consider.
