Track Biography:

The first Westmeath Foxhounds point-to-point took place in Loughegar in 1875. The Westmeath Foxhounds point to point committee have been holding meetings in Castletown Geoghegan for almost forty years. Prior to that, meetings were held at Mullingar Racecourse at Newbrook and Cullion, now the venue of Mullingar Showgrounds and Mullingar Rugby grounds.

During our Spring fixture we have one of the most prestigious contests run in the point-to-point circuit, the Barbour Cup. It has been the race where many racing stars have returned to point-to-pointing to run in Open Lightweights and have taken part in this historic race.

In addition, many young horses who have won their maiden here, have continued very successful careers on the track.For example previous course winner,  It Takes Time won the Ascot Gold Cup and wasthird in the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aswell as finshing fourth in the English Grand National. Royal Caviar, who won his maiden in 2013, went on to win four times on the track as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 Arkle chase at the Cheltenham festival.

How To Get There

By Road

Castletown-Geoghegan is 93km west of Dublin and 124km east of Galway.

From Dublin  - Take the M4 out of Dublin. At junction 12, take the M6 (signposted Athlone.) Leave the M6 for Kilbeggan at Junction 5. Then follow the signs for Kilbeggan Racecourse.

From Kilbeggan -  Take R389 to Castletown Geoghegan. Turn left in the village of Castletown Geoghegan at the church (L5230.) The course is 1.5km futher on this road on the righthand side.

From Mullingar - Take the R390 and follow the signs from Ballinea.

By Air

Castletown-Geoghegan is situated an hour and 10 minutes from Dublin Airport.

The Eoin Doyle-trained SCORE SHEET would likely have finished second but for a final fence fall on debut at Dromahane last April and that form would see him as the leading choice. The mare Lucy Mc has two creditable runs in Bumpers to her name from during the Summer, and she is an interesting entry here for the Gordon Elliott yard. Smart Plan and Jovial Joey both have experience to draw upon, whilst the newcomers are worth a check in the market as they represent some of the leading connections.

BOSTON LADY acquitted herself well on debut at the tail end of last season when finishing a creditable third to the highly rated Theatre Territory at Ballindenisk. A re-production of that effort would see her tough to beat here. Lastbutnotleast showed signs of progression throughout last season culminating in a second placing at Tralee and she will offer a challenge alongside former track performer Red Flight who has previous placed hurdle form to her name, whilst Rose Of Ratheniska was not beaten far in a pair of Bumpers.

Providing the quick turnaround has not left its mark, he is the selection. Colin McBratney took the winners contest at Toome last week with Quiet Account and his representative here, ITSNOTEASYTED, a proven Good ground performer is the obvious alternative. Fellow Northern raider One Tick finished placed behind last Sundays Rathcannon Open winner October Revolution at Stradbally in May and has claims. Whilst Night Sir has switched yards since his course victory from April, and Deise Vu would be a contender if returning to form.

VICTORYROWE found one too good last Sunday at Rathcannon, however with three recent placed track runs to his name, he has the strongest recent form in the book and gets the nod here. King Willie was placed in a maiden hurdle during the Summer at a big price and is a danger. Imperial Trix finished a close second at Inchydoney and if he can overcome an absence from competitive action, he too would hold leading claims. Whilst Buz Barton and Milan Breeze could make the frame on the pick of their form.
