Track Biography:

East Down Foxhounds Point-to-Point course at Tyrella is situated at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains made famous by the Percy French song.

With the 2018 Spring season, East Down will have been racing at Tyrella for fifty four years. Two meetings are held each Spring, in January and March.

Normally the first meeting of the Spring calendar in the Northern Region, Tyrella is a right handed undulating track where, given it’s close proximity to the sea and sandy soil is well drained and more often than not, produces good going.

This video from @NotFromHereStories gives you a snapshot of the picture-postcard setting that Tyrella point-to-point takes place in.

A day at Tyrella point-to-point races is the ideal day out for all the family in the heart of the Mourne Country.

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.
This allows racegoers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.

We have bookmakers on site and some will also show and take bets on track racing in both Ireland and England.

Our outside catering vendor has a variety of catering options from tasty hot lunches to sandwiches and confectionary.

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

For those who would like something stronger, we have a bar serving a selection of alocoholic beverages.

We don't have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing, a perfect excuse to get the wellies out !
Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.
Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.
At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.
No, we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

One of the real treats of racing at Tyrella, is just how close racegoers can get to the action. Watch the horses being saddled up by their trainers before making your way to the parade ring where the horses, jockeys and connections gather to discuss their pre-race tactics.

Denis Murphy saddled the impressive Palmers Hill to run out a wide-margin winner of this race 12 months ago. That horse had the benefit of a previous run in an early four-year-old maiden, as does his potential runner here, Our Bubba. He had finished fourth behind subsequent 400,000 pound seller Envoi Allen on debut and can be expected to come on for the run.

The Vincent Carroll-trained BERBORU came up against what looked an above average newcomer at Punchestown last month, but lost little credit in defeat with a game performance. She could gain a deserved victory here. The Oscar mare Its All A Lark has finished placed third in all four starts to date including at this venue back in January. She is a consistent sort who should not be far away.

The horse who beat him that day is now a 130-rated hurdler having finished placed at the Cheltenham November and December meetings, ensuring this French-bred will be expected to produce a good run on his pointing debut for Sam Curling. Classic Escape caught the eye before exiting two-out at Kirkistown, whilst Broadway Star and Ratfacemcdougall both finished second on their debut.

SOME RESPONSE disappointed at Kirkistown last time out, however this will be the first time this four-times previously placed son of Court Cave has lined-up in older maiden company and this may allow him to record a deserved victory. Stornaway could be a danger on his run around here in January, but he too must bounce back from a below par run and there may not be a lot separating him from Design Plan who also ran well around here at that January fixture.
